“The University of Auckland was always my top choice. My brother studied here and loved it, and I was fortunate enough to be part of UoA’s transition programmes in high school, which helped ease my move into university life,” Keanu recalls. “Originally, I wasn’t enrolled in Law, I was only doing a BA. My first week in, I had two friends doing Law who raved about their experience. That’s when I decided to check it out. I spoke to the Pacific Law Student Support Advisor, and they enrolled me right then and there.”
For Keanu, the support from the University’s advisors and faculty was pivotal. “The encouragement I received really showed me how much UoA invests in their students. They don’t just leave you once you’ve paid your fees – they help you chart your way forward.”
At Auckland Law School, Keanu has embraced a wide variety of electives, finding value in the diversity of options. “From South Pacific Legal Studies to a practical Community Law Internship elective, it’s been incredible to explore different areas of law and figure out what I’m passionate about.”
Keanu’s experiences within the Pacific Islands Law Students Association (PILSA) have also been a significant part of his journey. “PILSA has been my home away from home. I’ve been privileged to serve on the executive team as the Professional Development Officer, helping our members connect with legal professionals and craft their career paths.”
As someone from South Auckland, Keanu is passionate about giving back to his community.
Being brown in Law School is our superpower. We know we deserve a seat at the table, and I’m determined to use that seat to advocate for my people. I’ve seen firsthand the challenges we face, and my goal is to be a voice for the voiceless, especially in defence law.
Keanu’s advice to anyone considering studying at the University of Auckland is simple: “Take chances. Don’t doubt yourself. You never know what awaits you until you take that leap. You’re bound to find your people, and that makes the journey worth it.”
