Your studies is not an individual battle, you have a whole village of people with you that already want you to succeed – coming to the University of Auckland would extend that village to see your success.

He chose the University of Auckland for its top-ranking law programme and the advantage of being close to home. “It held the top programme for Law, with also the bonus of being close to home,” he explains. Ma’afu finds great value in learning the law, particularly in sharing this knowledge with his family and friends to support his community. “It may sound cliché, but it is genuinely learning the law,” he notes.

The support from the FOLAU team has been instrumental in Ma’afu’s academic journey, offering workshops, tutorials, and safe spaces for Pasifika students. “The FOLAU team have definitely helped me develop academically and smoothen my transition into University,” he says. His biggest achievement so far has been gaining acceptance into the Law School, marking a significant milestone as the first in his family to study law. “It had been a great achievement for not only myself but the great village that had supported me throughout the year,” he reflects.

Outside of his studies, Ma’afu volunteers with community organizations, helping with food packaging and guiding youth. This aligns with his goal of making a positive impact in his community. Although he is still exploring his specific career path in law, he values the versatility of his degree, believing it will be applicable in various sectors. “I feel a Bachelor of Law degree can be applicable in any sector,” he states.

Ma’afu enjoys the diverse connections he has made through his studies, feeling blessed to meet people from various backgrounds. “I am truly blessed to be where I am and be able to meet such a diverse group of people each and every day,” he shares.
