Invigilated (supervised) examinations
What is an invigilated exam?
An invigilated exam is a supervised or monitored exam.
Exam supervision, or invigilation, may be carried out in person or digitally (for manual review later), depending on how your exam has been structured.
In person invigilation: In-person supervision of an on campus exam, whether it be computer-based or a paper exam.
Digital invigilation software: Monitoring of an online or computer based exam using digital invigilation software (also known as remote proctoring software). The information gathered may be manually reviewed by Assessment Services following the exam.
Zoom invigilation (or an alternative): Supervision of an online exam or computer based exam by a person using technologies such as Zoom.
When invigilation would be used
Invigilation of an exam may be required for a number of reasons, for instance it may be a requirement of an accreditation body, required for professional registration or used as a means to help assure the results of exams that are the gateway to limited entry courses.
Not all exams need to be invigilated. Regardless of whether your exam is invigilated or not, you must follow the University's regulations, statutes and guidelines regarding academic integrity.
For more information, please see About academic integrity.
How to know if your exam will be invigilated
Your course-coordinator or lecturer will advise you if your examination is to be invigilated and in what format the exam and associated invigilation will be.
Exam mode B – Remote online invigilation using Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB)
- To access this application, please download the Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB)
*You can sit your exam anywhere, including at home. However, there are additional steps you will need to take to make sure you are prepared to sit your exam on the Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB), including downloading software before your exam. See below for further information about sitting your exam on the Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB).
Exam mode C – In-person invigilated exam on paper
If you are a New Zealand based student you must sit your exam in person at the City campus. If you have been approved to study remotely, your exam will be invigilated using digital invigilation software.
Exam mode D - In-person invigilated on computer through Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB)
- To access this application, please download the latest version of Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB) and check your device can pass the security checks before the exam.
These exams will be held using in-person invigilation on-campus and will be sat using Inspera's Integrity Browser (IIB). If you have been approved to study remotely, your exam will be invigilated under exam mode B conditions.
How University invigilates Inspera examinations
Inspera online and computer-based exams may be invigilated using any of the above invigilation methods.
For large course exams, invigilation will typically be undertaken using 'Inspera Proctoring' run through the Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB)
For a limited number of exams or for students that have specific accessibility requirements, zoom invigilation (or an alternative) may be used.
If your exam is a computer-based, on campus exam, it is likely that your exam will utilise in person invigilation, however this may not always be the case.
Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB)
- To access this application, please download Inspera Integrity Browser (previously Inspera Exam Portal)
Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB) is a digital invigilation tool and monitors student behaviors through artificial intelligence during an exam.
IIB does not include live invigilation.
At the exam start time, the student enters the PIN-code to access their exam and Inspera Proctoring (previously Smarter Proctoring) completes system checks and an ID check of the individual sitting the exam.
During the exam the functionality records the student via their webcam, screen and audio capabilities and in the background, flags the behaviors pre-defined by the system that may indicate a lack of academic integrity e.g., presence of another person in the room (visually or heard).
If connectivity is lost during the exam, the recording continues and is synchronised once connectivity is restored.
The flags recorded are reported to Assessment Services by the system once the examination is complete. Assessment Services then manually review the recordings of exams where the number and type of flags may indicate a potential for academic misconduct.
Recordings will never be used in isolation or without human oversight to determine events of academic misconduct, but may be considered in conjunction with other evidence if it is likely that academic misconduct has occurred.
