Dean Lin

A recipient of the University of Auckland Transnational Education Partner High Achiever Award, Dean began his studies in his home country of China and is now studying towards a Master of Data Science.

Dean chose the University of Auckland because of its strong academic reputation and vibrant, multicultural environment. "The university's focus on research and innovation, combined with its supportive learning atmosphere, made it an ideal place for me to pursue my studies," he says.

He loves the natural beauty that surrounds Auckland. "From the Army Bay to the Shakespeare Regional parks, there's always something to explore," he enthuses. “The city's vibrant cultural scene, with its festivals, art galleries, and music events, keeps life exciting and diverse.”

What surprised Dean the most about life in New Zealand is how much people value their leisure time and spending it outdoors. "The slower pace of life, compared to other major cities, was a pleasant surprise and has helped me appreciate the little things more," he observes.

Dean plans to become a project manager after completing his studies. "My programme has helped me build the ability of teamwork, data analysis, and communication with others," he states. His degree equips him with the essential skills needed for his future career.

Dean advises prospective students to be open to new experiences and take advantage of the diverse learning environment. "The University offers a wealth of resources and support, including the student association (AUSA) and the career service (CDES), so don't hesitate to reach out for help when needed," he recommends.

Living in university accommodation is convenient and offers a great sense of community. "There are various options available for international students, from shared apartments to individual rooms. The accommodations are well-maintained, secure, and provide a supportive environment," he explains. This setup ensures a comfortable and enriching living experience for students.
