Zhibo Xing
Through a Transnational partnership, Zhibo is completing a dual PhD programme with the University of Auckland and Beijing Institute of Technology in his home of China.
Zhibo's decision to pursue his studies at the University of Auckland was driven by the close collaboration between his domestic supervisor and researchers at the university. "Their shared focus and expertise provide a unique opportunity for me to benefit from their combined knowledge and resources".
One of the most valuable aspects of Zhibo's programme is the opportunity to engage in meaningful exchanges with colleagues and supervisors. "These interactions with lab mates and supervisors create a rich intellectual environment where ideas are shared, perspectives are challenged, and collaborations are formed."
Zhibo has found the support from faculty and staff at the University of Auckland to be exceptional with academic and personal queries. "The regular meetings and guidance from my supervisors have played a crucial role in advancing my academic progress while collaborating with my lab mates has expanded my research perspectives." Additionally, he has greatly benefited from the extensive online resources provided by the university.
He enjoys the culturally rich life in Auckland. "I love the diverse and multicultural environment of the city. It's home to people from various ethnic backgrounds, which creates a vibrant and inclusive community." This diversity is reflected in the cultural events, festivals, and the wide range of cuisines available, making Auckland a dynamic and exciting place to live.
New students should focus on building relationships with their peers and mentors. Regular communication and collaboration with classmates and advisors can provide valuable insights and support throughout your academic journey.
The natural beauty of New Zealand has been a delightful surprise for Zhibo. "The country's landscapes are incredibly beautiful and provide endless opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration, making my experience in here both refreshing and inspiring. One of my most memorable experiences in New Zealand was bungee jumping in Queenstown, which was thrilling and allowed me to push my boundaries".
Since arriving in Auckland, Zhibo has lived in shared accommodation for the first time. "This new experience has been incredibly enriching, as it has allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures." This experience has also helped him improve his communication and cooperation skills.
