Zhanjie Gan
Zhanjie is pursuing a Bachelor of Education in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and hopes to build a career in bilingual education in his home country of China.
The University of Auckland's reputation for excellence and support system were key considerations in Zhanjie’s decision to study here. "I already knew that the University offers comprehensive and excellent services, both academically and in other areas."
Zhanjie began his undergraduate studies in China at the Zhuhai College of Science and Technology, and after two years, transferred to the University of Auckland under our Transnational Education (TNE) Dual Bachelors programme. The TNE programme helped ease his transition before arriving in Auckland and “since I have been studying here, the TNE team has been offering their support academically and ensuring I settle in”.
What he values most about the Bachelor of Education is the open communication with his professors and classmates. “If I have trouble studying or completing the assignments, the Professors are always willing to help”.
He really enjoys the benefits that university accommodation offers. “For most of my student career, I have lived in Carlaw Park Student Village. What attracts me most is that different and interesting social events are held every week. Food is included which lets me focus on my studies”.
Something he found surprising about life in Auckland is the multiculturalism where he has “the opportunity to attend different traditional ethnic festivals every month and able to have fantastic experience of different language weeks, as well as find different kinds of delicious cuisine from all over the world”.
The accommodation is well-equipped with essential living facilities, ensuring safety and convenience in transportation. More importantly, living in the dormitories offers the chance to make friends from all over the world and develop social skills.
Since moving away from home, he’s tried many things for the first time. “In life, I developed independence, not relying on my parents or others, especially the first time to solve all the things in life of Auckland by myself, such as finding a part-time job”.
