DELNA
Some students are required to complete a compulsory course to ensure they have a good level of academic English.
What is DELNA?
DELNA is an assessment programme to help you to be successful in your studies. All students start with the screening as step one. Some students move on to step two, the diagnosis, if the screening identifies that they need to do so. They will have their academic English skills more thoroughly assessed, and, following that, a private and confidential conversation with one of our friendly language advisers. This meeting is the third step in the DELNA process and is key to your studies as you will be linked to a Canvas programme to give you support in the areas needed.
It is important to connect with DELNA early in your studies.

When to do your DELNA screening
As early as possible, preferably prior to orientation.
EDUCSW 199
This compulsory, zero-point course is for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education Teaching, Bachelor of Sport, Health and PE, Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies, Bachelor of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and the Graduate Diploma of Teaching.
- Completion of EDUCSW 199 is compulsory. It is not worth any credits.
- You will not be permitted to graduate until you have met all of the requirements for EDUCSW 199.
- EDUCSW 199 involves the completion of DELNA, beginning with the screening.
For many students, completion of the screening is all that is needed. Results are not graded beyond an indication of whether you have completed the course (CPL). This will appear on your academic record at the end of your second semester.
EDUCSW 199 follow-up
Following the screening, some students will be required to complete a two-hour diagnosis. This must be booked before the start of your first practicum. After completing the diagnosis, you will receive an email asking you to book an appointment with an academic English language adviser (AELA).
If you need to complete the diagnosis, do so as soon as possible and be sure to book an appointment with a language adviser to discuss your EDUCSW 199 requirements.
At your EDUCSW 199 appointment
The adviser will go over your diagnosis results with you and advise you of the modules you need to complete in the EDUCSW 199 Canvas course to address any language gaps. You will also need to submit a sample of writing.
After completing the course you may need to return for a completion appointment with an academic English language adviser or to complete a post-DELNA assessment.
What if I've already completed a DELNA screening?
Please check with the AELA team if you have already completed a DELNA screening for another programme at the University of Auckland to see if you require a further screening.
