Jane Blake - Housing social worker
The Tertiary Foundation Certificate gave Jane a sense of confidence to begin studying. Driven by her faith and commitment to helping people in need, Jane completed her Bachelor of Social Work with first class honours.
“After taking a decade away from studies, the Tertiary Foundation Certificate was a great way to prepare my mind and get back into a study routine.
“Through the programme, I was able to face my fears and re-visit courses that I had found difficult in high school, particularly maths. It was enjoyable to see how, with a second chance, I could reach grades that I only dreamed of when I was at school. My maths lecturer really believed in me, and in the end I managed to get an A- in that class!
“Once I had completed the TFC, I considered completing a degree in arts or science, but my faith as a Christian steered me to social work.
I’ve always loved helping people in need, and it was refreshing to re-discover that passion through social work.
“The TFC gave me confidence and sense of peace, especially on my first day as a social work student. I already knew what university would be like, and I was familiar with the resources available to students. I was excited to take on this new challenge, and I even imagined myself graduating as a top student because I felt ready!
“The Bachelor of Social Work programme was very rewarding but challenging. I became pregnant in my final year, and there were many challenging moments, but my husband, friends, supervisors and faith always motivated me to finish the study journey. I passed my degree with first class honours in May 2019 and gave birth a month later.
“I’ve just started my new role as a housing social worker at Monte Cecelia Housing Trust and I am quite excited about it. A new chapter has begun! I hope my story can encourage others on their social work journey. Once you find your passion, no one can stop you from achieving your goals.”
