In the first year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts, students should enrol in:
Semester One:
- FINEARTS 110
- FINEARTS 111
- WTR 100
Semester Two:
- FINEARTS 112
- FINEARTS 113 and
- 15 points of Fine Arts electives and/or General Education courses
- including an AELR course if you are required to take one (ACADENG 100 or 101 recommended)
- 15 points of Fine Arts electives and/or General Education courses
BFA conjoint students need to carefully plan enrolments on both sides of the conjoint degree. You should use My Programme Requirements to check the courses in your degree, which courses you can take, and your progress.

Courses
FINEARTS 110 - Introduction to Fine Arts Technologies
- Course prescription: Introduces students to a range of technical workshops and skills for artistic practice. Students will develop a set of technical competencies and build their capacity to think through making. Students will be inducted into best workshop practice, whakaute, health & safety protocols, and be assessed as safe workshop users while working under direct supervision.

FINEARTS 111 - Fine Arts Studio 1
- Course prescription: Through a series of three short studio-based projects, students will be introduced to key concepts and practices of painting, sculpture and social practice. Emphasises the acquisition of skills in conceptual thinking and the development of ideas, using a range of approaches to the making and presentation of artworks. Aspects of Mātauranga Māori and its relationship to artmaking will also be introduced.

FINEARTS 112 - Fine Arts Studio 2
- Course prescription: Through a series of three short studio-based projects, students will be introduced to key concepts and practices of print, time-based arts, and photography. Emphasises the acquisition of skills in conceptual thinking and the development of ideas, using a range of approaches to the making and presentation of artworks. Aspects of Mātauranga Māori and its relationship to artmaking will also be introduced.

FINEARTS 113 - Ideas and Contexts for Creative Practice
- Course prescription: Introduces the ways knowledge of contemporary art and ideas can enable an individual artistic practice. Students will discover and understand ideas relevant to contemporary art.
