Marie Ysabel Landingin
The Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours) gave Marie Ysabel Landingin the confidence to navigate challenges as a transport planner.
“Most New Zealanders and people worldwide live in urban areas. So, for most of us, the outcomes of urban planning are everywhere. Just step outside your door or read the news. I think that urban planners have a hand in creating the communities and cities we want for today and the future.”
What was it like studying the Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours)?
“The Bachelor of Urban Planning courses encouraged discussion and creativity to develop solutions to complex urban issues such as housing, transport, and land use economics. There were also many opportunities to apply theories to case studies or topics of your choice, giving you room to explore your passions.
“The lecturers and tutors are the backbone of the School and the industry. Their expertise and passion influence the way many planners in New Zealand think. They are wise, patient, and generous people who are incredibly invested in their students – even once they’ve graduated.
“Thanks to the collaborative nature of the papers, there were many opportunities to really get to know my classmates – now some are lifelong friends and colleagues.
“While studying, I also had the opportunity to travel to Tokyo for an internship through the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia. I spent two months leading a research project about the emerging urban trends in Japan and their relevance to Aotearoa. It was a memorable experience that widened my perspective of Asia, deepened my learnings from university, and expanded my horizons as a planner.”
What key skills did you gain from the degree?
“My Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours) degree gave me a lot of useful technical knowledge around how cities and planning systems work.
I think the most valuable skills I gained were problem solving through critical thinking, the ability to seek and understand different perspectives, and to communicate complex ideas.
Can you tell us about your current role?
“I am a Transport Planner at the global consultancy firm WSP. Each day is different. I work with and learn from many different people, like technical experts, decision-makers, and local communities across New Zealand. Together, we are delivering a safe, inclusive, and connected transport system that serves people — today and in the future.”
Do you have any advice for future students?
“Reach out to the University, current students, the New Zealand Planning Institute, or any planners you know. Get involved with your local community, council, or follow the news. Learn about what’s happening in the world around you and what interests you. Urban planning is happening all around us, so go and explore!”
