How to apply

  1. Review: the application requirements and selection criteria detailed below.
  2. Ask us: Do you have questions about the selection criteria or application process? Email us at rez.gardi@auckland.ac.nz to set up a time to speak with someone directly.
  3. Check: Does your application include all three of the required sections?
      - Resume
      - Two letters of recommendation
      - Personal statement
  4. Send your resume, letters of recommendation and personal statement to rez.gardi@auckland.ac.nz with your full name by 5pm on Thursday 29 February 2024. Please note that we have extended the original deadline.
  5. Wait for us to contact you. Successful applicants will be asked to attend an interview in the first week of March.

Selection criteria

Successful candidates for the Refugee Advisory Panel will have:

  • Held refugee status, sought asylum, or experienced displacement and resettled in Aotearoa New Zealand
  •  Demonstrated leadership experience in a refugee-led or refugee-serving organisation in New Zealand or elsewhere
  • Demonstrated engagement in global refugee policy discussions and refugee networks
  •  Contribute to the Refugee Advisory Panel’s thematic expertise, for example, but not limited to, expertise in issues of gender, education, economic inclusion, protection, resettlement, etc
  • Contribute to the Refugee Advisory Panel’s demographic, location, age, and gender diversity
  • Demonstrated ability to work in English
  •  Willingness to commit a minimum of 5 hours a month to the work of the Refugee Advisory Panel over a 24-month period.

Application requirements

  • Resumé (two pages)
  • Two letters of recommendation that speak to:
    - Your ability to fulfill the proposed Refugee Advisory Panel’s proposed objectives
    - How you meet the selection criteria
    - Why you would be a good candidate for the Refugee Advisory Panel
  • Personal statement of maximum 500 words that details:
    - How you meet the criteria
    - What you hope to gain from the Refugee Advisory Panel
    - What you hope to contribute to the Refugee Advisory Panel
    - What you hope to achieve through the Refugee Advisory Panel
    - How you will represent and be accountable to, refugee communities

How long will Panel members serve?

  • Panel members will serve for two years.
  • To improve continuity, a staggered approach to future appointments is being considered.

How much will Panel members be paid?

  • Panel members will be paid an Honorarium in line with the Fees Framework for compensation of individuals on government advisory groups, as outlined by Cabinet.

How will Panel members be appointed?

  • Applicants will need to show how their experience and skills meet the selection criteria.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview.

The application process

Below is a simple timeline of the application process for the Panel. The dates listed below are only tentative outline. If you are interested in applying but are unsure about these dates and your capacity (due to school, work, family, or community commitments for example) please complete your application and simply let us know if you have any concerns or questions.

Monday 22 January Applications open for two panel members to join the current 7 NZRAP members.
Thursday 29 February Applications close at 5pm. Extended for one week! 
Friday 23 February - Friday 1 March  All applications will be reviewed by the Selection Committee
Friday 1 March 
Interviewees will be notified, and the interview times confirmed.
Monday 4 March - Friday 8 March 

Interviews will be held via ZOOM. The interview panel will include (3-4) representatives from the selection committee.

Successful applicants and all other applicants will be notified over this period.

The first meeting and orientation for new panel representatives has been re-scheduled for 22 - 24 March.
