Smridhi Marwah – International Doctoral student
It was New Zealand’s welcoming and diverse cultural environment, breathtaking natural scenery and the university’s distinguished reputation for innovation and research excellence that made Smridhi choose to pursue doctoral study at the University of Auckland (UoA).
“When it comes to studying Education and Social Work, UoA stands out globally, and the prospect of being mentored by a renowned academic in my research area was a significant draw for me.”
During my time at the university, I've had the privilege of engaging in numerous enriching experiences, such as participating in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.
"This, along with the Research Showcase and the Doctoral Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, not only broadened my exposure to the research efforts of other Ph.D. candidates across various disciplines but also encouraged me to adopt a transdisciplinary approach in my work, blending academic research, entrepreneurship, and social innovation.”
Smridhi got involved with the Postgraduate Students' Association (PGSA) because of her long-held belief in the power of student representation to effect meaningful policy changes and reforms.
“My engagement began after interacting with faculty members who emphasized the value of student associations in fostering a vibrant academic and social environment. Through the PGSA, we've been able to organize events that have significantly enriched the postgraduate experience, ranging from social engagements to skill development opportunities."
As an international doctoral student from India, the support I received from my supervisors was instrumental in easing my transition to New Zealand. They have been incredibly attentive to my well-being and provided invaluable guidance.
"The Doctoral Scholarship from UoA has been a crucial financial support, ensuring my stability and smooth adaptation to a new cultural setting. Additionally, the university has offered numerous research projects and teaching assistant opportunities that have facilitated my cultural integration.”
Smridhi noted that exploring New Zealand has been an absolute joy during her time here.
“My passion for travel has allowed me to connect with fellow travel enthusiasts at the university, forming deep and lasting friendships. From the Bay of Islands to Mount Taranaki, Aotearoa's stunning landscapes offer unforgettable experiences to all. The beauty of this country is truly unmatched, and my adventures here have been among the highlights of my time in New Zealand.”
