Rachel Bruns - Master of Social Work (Professional)

The Master of Social Work (Professional) has helped Rachel develop the skills and confidence she needed to re-enter the work force.

“After a few years being a full-time parent, I began to seek out opportunities that would allow me to bring together my previous work experience supporting people facing hardship, and my interest in how practical, on-the-ground care of people experiencing crisis interacts with structural and societal frameworks.

"I wanted to work in a job that considered both the big picture of structural change and the more immediate needs of an a person/whānau within the system.

“What was really appealing about the Master of Social Work programme was the challenge and growth it offered. Doing masters level study really challenged me to become a more critical and reflective thinker. The practical placements that you go on through your studies also really helped me grow and become more confident before re-entering the workforce.

“One of the best parts of the programme is the great people you meet who become your colleagues and contacts. As I studied part-time, I was a part of two cohorts and got to know my classmates in both. I especially appreciated having people working in social work roles come and teach us at times which was very insightful.

“The practical placements were excellent learning experiences. My first placement with Lifewise Housing First was great. It was very interesting trying to reconcile what we had learned and discussed in classes with the day-to-day work in an organisation. I did my placement there alongside another student from my cohort which meant we could do peer supervision; and two a half years later, we are now both working there together as colleagues.

“I would recommend this programme to people who want to really consider how they work with others and why. Previously in my career, I have felt like I was crashing around the place, trying to do something good but not having the skills to critically reflect on what I was doing. This programme has been great in helping me develop the skills and confidence I needed to re-enter the work force.”
