Reflecting on her formative years at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Simran fondly recalls the transformative experiences that shaped her journey. Beyond the confines of her optometry studies, she seized every opportunity to immerse herself in a myriad of activities offered by The University. From encouraging prospective students at Mānawa Mai Open Day, to spearheading interdisciplinary events, her tenure as President of the Optometry Student Society epitomised her unwavering commitment to community engagement and collaboration.
Optometry wasn't merely a career choice for Simran, but a calling nurtured since childhood. Inspired by her own optometrist, she was drawn to the profession's blend of intellect and compassion. Her dedication manifested in academic pursuits and volunteer work, where she found joy in conducting vision screenings in schools and making a tangible difference in young lives.
Yet, Simran's journey didn't confine her to a singular path. Armed with an unyielding spirit of exploration, she ventured into the realm of finance, seamlessly transitioning from the clinical world of optometry to the intricacies of monetary affairs. Her advice to aspiring career changers resonates with wisdom and pragmatism—embrace the journey, test the waters, and never discount the value of your foundational education. A piece of advice given to her by her father, is something she stands by.
“Your education is something that no one can ever take from you.”
From the resilience cultivated through real-world clinical experiences to the art of effective communication refined through patient interactions, Simran feels her time with the faculty equipped her with a robust skill set adaptable to diverse landscapes.
Within the School of Optometry, there was such a culture of trying things even before you’re ready, and you'll be supported. You always have your lecturers and supervisors to fall back on. Try things, even if you don't feel like you're ready.
