Inaugural Lecture: Professor Nuala Helsby

Date: 9 May 2024

Title: A meander (with diversions) through my cancer-pharmaco-genetic journey

Professor Helsby's lecture reflected on the enjoyment she gets from the diverse roles as an academic scientist and the constant surprise as to how on earth she got here!

Nuala was born and raised in the United Kingdom and moved to New Zealand in 1997. She undertook a PhD at the University of Liverpool in the field of pharmacogenetics. She has had a diverse research career including postdoctoral positions at the University of Birmingham as well as the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre. Following her appointment as a senior lecturer in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology, she returned to her original interest in pharmacogenetics and has enjoyed the opportunity to develop many clinical collaborations. She has two wonderful children, four chickens and a very understanding husband.
