Manaaki Manawa - The Centre for Heart Research
Manaaki Manawa brings together researchers to enable innovative research to address the problem of cardiovascular disease and improve heart health equity in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our research
Cardiovascular-related diseases are the country’s biggest killers and remains the greatest contributor to inequitable health outcomes in Aotearoa New Zealand, impacting Māori and Pacific Peoples disproportionately. Manaaki Manawa strives to create a vibrant transdisciplinary community of heart health researchers and practitioners to drive collaborative research, workforce development, outreach and community engagement to deliver meaningful benefit and equity to Aotearoa New Zealand.
The aims of Manaaki Manawa are:
- In partnership with Māori and Pacific communities, work together to support cardiovascular research that addresses the gaps in cardiovascular outcomes.
- Promote the collaboration and coordination of basic, translational and clinical research in cardiovascular health.
- Build a more equitable and representative, sustained heart health workforce through outreach, leadership, and research training opportunities for Māori, Pacific Peoples and women.
- Collaborate and partner with organisations to find novel ways to engage and excite students and the community around heart health science.
Our Centre expertise ranges from genome to phenome, with expertise and infrastructure to study a single cell to large populations and back again.
