Gastric rhythm mapping study

We are looking for healthy volunteers to take part in our gastric body-surface mapping studies at the brand-new clinical research centre in Grafton.

Gastric Electrical Activity Recordings at the Body Surface

In this study we are looking at stomach electrical activity in healthy people using new, non-invasive body surface gastric mapping (BGSM) device which is like an electrocardiogram for your stomach. We are interested in stomach activity in healthy people, in order to create a model of what 'normal' activity looks like. This will be useful to be able to recognise what is abnormal, in people with diseases of the digestive tract.

What's involved?

The study lasts for 4.5 hours (plus 10-15 minutes for set up). You are able to work from a laptop or read a book during this time. Participants cannot have anything to eat or drink after midnight the night before for the study.

We generally start the studies at 8am to reduce the amount of time participants are fasting before receiving the study meal, but we can start later if required.

During the study you have the BSGM electrodes on your stomach to measure the electrical activity and you will be asked to answer some questions. After 30 minutes of baseline recording we will provide you with a standard meal (a Clif bar and a milkshake) and then continue recording for another 4 hours.
