Eligibility Requirements for 2026 Admission
To be eligible to be considered for selection into LLB Part II 2026 onwards, you need:
- LLB Part I Courses: You must pass LAW 121G and pass LAW 131 and LAW 141with at least a C+
- WTR Course: You must pass at least 15 points of the Waipapa Taumata Rau (WTR) course relevant to your degree
- Non-Law Courses: You must have completed at least 75 points (or the equivalent) of non-law university degree courses at bachelor’s level or above, excluding ‘Pass’ grades (including the WTR course)
- Overall GPA: You must have passed all eight courses (120 points) with an overall average GPA of at least 3.00 (C+)
The LawGPA required for admission will be determined by the Law Selection Committee in December of the year prior to admission. Please note that entry requirements may change each year.

2026 LLB Part II LawGPA Calculation
For entry into LLB Part II starting in 2026, the LawGPA will be calculated based on the following courses and criteria:
- LAW 121G – single weighted
- LAW 131 – double weighted
- LAW 141 – double weighted
- Recent most, best 60 points from non-law university courses at bachelor’s level or above (excluding WTR courses) – single weighted
Note: The "recent most, best 60 points" refers to non-law courses completed in the most recent academic year (e.g., Summer School 2025 to Semester Two 2025).
If you have repeated any LLB Part I courses (LAW 121G, LAW 131, LAW 141), only the highest grade for each course will be considered, with all other grades excluded.

The minimum LawGPA required for selection varies yearly based on the number of applicants. Typically, the minimum LawGPA ranges from 5.0 to 6.7 (equivalent to a B to B+).
If you’re transferring from another New Zealand Law School, your LawGPE (Grade Point Equivalent) will be calculated differently.

Sample LawGPA calculation

Grades Counted as Zero in LawGPA Calculation
When calculating the your LawGPA, the following results will be counted as zero, unless one of the exceptions applies:
- Withdrawals (prior to 2023)
- Did Not Sit or Did Not Complete results
Exceptions
- If more than 60 points of non-law courses were taken in the same year
- If you can demonstrate that the result was due to extraordinary circumstances beyond your control (documentary evidence required)
Note: Withdrawals made from 2023 onwards will not affect your Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland cumulative, or term GPA.
Grades Not Considered in LawGPA Calculation
When applying for LLB Part II, the following grades will not be considered towards your LawGPA:
- Courses with ‘Pass’ grades
- ‘Withdrawals’ (W) received from 2023 onwards
Note: If you have a W grade for LAW 121G, LAW 131, or LAW 141 and have not previously passed the course, you will not be eligible for consideration for LLB Part II.
If you take a ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ grade course, you must take another non-law course to make up for the points, ensuring you meet the 75 points non-law requirement.

GPA Variations and Discretionary Hardship
If you believe your LawGPA does not accurately reflect your academic performance, you can apply for a GPA Variation or Discretionary Hardship:
- GPA Variation: For specific adjustments to your LawGPA calculation due to exceptional circumstances.
- Discretionary Hardship: If your LawGPA has been significantly impacted by unforeseen personal challenges.
Both applications must be submitted by 1 October. For further details or to apply, please email lawstudentsupport@auckland.ac.nz.
Variations
Less than 60pts non-law taken in current academic year
If you’ve taken fewer than 60 points of non-law courses in the current year, all courses from that year will be included, and the remaining points will be taken from the next academic year, selecting the highest grades first.
Example:

Example: If a student takes 30 points of non-law in 2025 and includes a WTR course, the remaining 30 points will be selected from 2024 grades, prioritising the best grades.

Non-law courses weighted other than 15pts
If you’ve taken non-law courses with weightings other than 15 points, the best grades from the most recent academic year will be selected and weighted accordingly.
Example:

Example: If a student has a 30-point non-law course with a B grade from 2022, only 15 points will be used for the LawGPA calculation, as this is the maximum weight for non-law courses.

Applicants with recent non-law study from another university
Not all universities have the same grading scales, course weightings, or equivalent full-time workload. For applicants with recent non-law study from another university, a Grade Point Equivalent (GPE) will be calculated, converting your grades and points to a University of Auckland equivalent.
Note: LawGPE calculations are done after the LLB Part II application deadline has closed.
We strongly encourage you to apply for LLB Part II by 1 October of the year prior to your intended entry. The final date to apply is 1 December, and applications received after this date will not be accepted.
Entry requirements may change each year, so be sure to review the latest information.
