How is LawGPA calculated for admission into LLB Part II?

The LawGPA is a specially calculated (non-standard) GPA used for admission to LLB Part II. It includes grades from both your law and non-law courses.

Due to recent changes in eligibility requirements, please refer to specific LawGPA’s criteria for:

2025 LLB Part II Admissions

LawGPA for entry into LLB Part II will be calculated on the basis of your grades in:

  • LAW 121G – single weighted
  • LAW 131 – double weighted
  • LAW 141 – double weighted
  • Recent most, best 75 points from non-law courses – single weighted

The LawGPA required for admission will be determined by the Law Selection Committee in December 2024.

When calculating your LawGPA, the “recent most, best 75 points” from non-law courses refers to those completed in the most recent academic year. For example, this would include courses taken from Summer School 2024 to Semester Two 2024.

If you have repeated any LLB Part I courses (LAW 121G, LAW 131, LAW 141), only your highest grade in each of these courses will be included in the calculation, and all other grades will be excluded.

The minimum LawGPA required for selection into LLB Part II can vary from year to year, depending on the number of applicants. In recent years, the minimum required LawGPA has typically ranged between 5.0–6.7 (equivalent to a grade between a B and a B+).

If you are applying for transfer from another New Zealand Law School, your LawGPE (equivalent) will be calculated differently.

LawGPA Calculation and Impact of Withdrawals

When calculating the LawGPA, 'withdrawals' prior to 2023*, as well as 'did not sit' and 'did not complete' results, will be counted as zero, unless one of the following applies:

  • You have taken more than 75 points of non-law courses in the same year; or
  • You can demonstrate that the 'withdrawal', 'did not sit' or 'did not complete' result was due to extraordinary and significant circumstances beyond your control, and you can provide documentary evidence to support this.

Please note, withdrawals made from 2023 onwards will not affect your Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland cumulative or term GPA.

If you believe your LawGPA should be adjusted due to extenuating circumstances, you can apply for a GPA Variation. Applications must be submitted to the Law Selection Committee by 1 October, by emailing lawstudentsupport@auckland.ac.nz.

Variations

Less than 75pts non-law taken in current academic year

Where students have taken less than 75pts non-law courses in the current academic year, all courses from the current year will be used with the remaining points taken from the next most recent academic year of study with courses selected by the best grade first.

Example:

Example of LawGPA calculation of non-law courses
Example of LawGPA calculation of non-law courses

In this example, this student has taken 45pts non-law in 2024. For the remaining 30pts non-law, 2023 grades have been ranked with ‘non-law 4 and 5’ being the highest non-law grades taken.

Non-law courses weighted other than 15pts

Where students have taken non-law courses weighted other than 15pts, courses will be selected by the best grade first in the most recent academic year and weighted accordingly.

Example:

In this example, this student’s non-law grades have been ranked with ‘non-law 5’ being the lowest non-law grade taken in 2022. Although this is worth 30pts, as only an additional 15pts non-law is needed for the LawGPA calculation, this course is instead weighted as 15pts with the B grade used.

2026 LLB Part II Admissions

LawGPA for entry into LLB Part II will be calculated on the basis of your grades in:

  • LAW 141 – double weighted
  • Recent most, best 60 points from non-law university courses (excludes WTR courses) – single weighted

Applicants with recent non-law study from another university

Not all universities have the same grading scales, course weightings, or equivalent full-time workload. For applicants with recent non-law study from another university, a Grade Point Equivalent (GPE) will be calculated, converting your grades and points to a University of Auckland equivalent.

Please note that LawGPE calculations are done after the LLB Part II application deadline has closed.

We strongly encourage you to apply for LLB Part II by 1 October of the year prior to your intended entry. The final date to apply is 1 December, and applications received after this date will not be accepted.

Entry requirements may change each year, so be sure to review the latest information.
