Professor Justin O'Sullivan - Liggins Institute Director
Professor Justin O’Sullivan is Director of the Liggins Institute and holds honorary appointments at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the University of Southampton, and A*STAR Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences, Singapore.
Professor Justin O’Sullivan completed a PhD in molecular microbiology from the University of Otago, then undertook postdocs at the University of Kent at Canterbury and University of Oxford. In 2004 he took up a position as Senior Lecturer at Massey University in Albany and in 2010 was awarded the Life Technologies Life Science Award for Emerging Excellence in Molecular Biology in New Zealand.
Professor O’Sullivan joined the University of Auckland Waipapa Taumata Rau as a Senior Research Fellow at the Liggins Institute in 2012. He then took up the Associate Director Research position and was appointed Deputy Director in February 2020. He was appointed Director in July 2023.
Professor O’Sullivan has published more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and holds honorary appointments at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the University of Southampton, and A*STAR Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences, Singapore. In his research he uses cutting edge technologies from molecular biology, bioinformatics, and computational biology to understand DNA and cell structure formation, function, inheritance, and how we influence and are influenced by our microbes.
