The NiPPeR child study

Emerging research highlights the critical role of a mother’s nutritional status at the start of pregnancy in influencing her baby’s development. For instance, elevated maternal blood sugar levels can increase the likelihood of the child developing excess body fat later in life. The NiPPeR study, titled Nutritional Intervention Preconception and during Pregnancy to maintain healthy glucosE levels and offspRing health', is an international collaborative research initiative involving New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The study aims to assess the benefits of specific nutrients for both mother and baby, focusing on their ability to regulate healthy maternal blood sugar, vitamin, and mineral levels. The research also explores how these factors contribute to a healthy pregnancy and the optimal growth and development of the child.
The NiPPeR child study presents a unique opportunity for postgraduate students to participate in this meaningful research. The original randomised controlled trial gave mothers a nutritional intervention during pregnancy to optimise glucose levels. The children of these mothers are now 6-8 years old and are being followed up. Complex analyses are being undertaken. This is one of the most detailed and intricate studies ever conducted in terms of data and samples collected.
A postgraduate student can participate in data analysis, interpretation, and publication related to three broad areas: child body composition, maternal breast milk composition and the role of paternal factors on the child’s outcome. The NiPPeR study has resulted in more than 20 publications in high-impact journals, and many more are planned.
This project can be undertaken as a PhD.

- Candidates must meet the entry criteria for a doctoral degree at the University of Auckland.
