MMI Interviewee FAQs

The content of this page will only be relevant to applicants who have been invited by email to participate in the MMI interviews for 2025 entry.

Accepting your MMI invitation

You will need to nominate two referees who can comment on your suitability to work with children as part of our requirements under the Children's Act 2014. You will enter your chosen referee's names and contact details into the bespoke portal when you accept your MMI invitation.

Referees should be over 18 and have known you for at least 6 months. Referees must not be family members or close personal friends. Please do not nominate referees who will not have access to their email address during January (e.g. High School Teachers). Your referees will be contacted by the Faculty Admissions Team.

Changing referee details

If you need to change your referee details after accepting the invitation, email your request to FMHSAdmission@auckland.ac.nz. So that we can pick it up quickly, please title your subject line “FMHS MMI Referee - Alteration Request”.

After accepting your MMI invitation

After accepting your MMI invitation, there are two more important tasks you must complete.

1. Complete the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Children's Act questionnaire form

The Children's Act (CA) 2014 requires that all people who work or are likely to work with children must be safety checked. The University is obliged to safety check applicants for all health professional training programmes.

In order to assess your safety under the CA, we need you to complete  our Children's Act 2014 - Safety Checking form.

The answers submitted in the Children's Act 2014 - Safety Checking form will not be taken into consideration as part of the final ranking for the programme-entry selection. However, only students who satisfy the CA safety requirements will be offered a place.

The information you provide will be kept securely, with access strictly controlled and limited to those who are entitled to see it as part of their duties.

This form is due by Sunday 25 August 2024

2. Submit your completed Police vetting form and Identity documents

You will need to download and complete the Police vetting consent form before submitting via our online Police vetting consent and ID documents form.

You will also need to include two forms of ID, one of these must be a primary ID and one must be a secondary ID. See the table below for a list of acceptable ID types. In addition, one of your IDs, must contain a photograph.

You will also need to have these IDs with you on the day of your MMI to show the Interviewer during the ID check/rest station.

Current identity documents are preferred, but documents that have expired within the past 5 years will be accepted.

You must combine your completed Police vetting form and your two forms of ID into a single PDF for upload.

Important to note

GPA requirements

Invitations to MMI interviews has been assessed based on the grades available at the time of assessment.

If you are studying in Semester Two we have assessed your application using an interim GPA with optimal grades (i.e. A+ or equivalent) for any courses in progress.

If your final GPA falls below the programme-specific interview threshold, you will no longer be eligible for consideration for final selection for that programme.

The threshold for each programme will be determined by the Faculty Admissions Office once final grades are received and the entire application pool for 2025 entry is reviewed.

University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ)

The Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) specifically requires that you undertake the UCAT ANZ in the year of application.

It is an applicant’s responsibility to ensure that you have completed this requirement. If you do not satisfy the UCAT ANZ requirements, your application for MBChB will not be able to progress.

Vaccination Statement

While studying a clinical programme at the University of Auckland, you will need to be immunised to complete your course requirements. Immunised means that you have been vaccinated or inoculated against certain diseases to development immunity from infection. Being immunised is a requirement of working as a healthcare worker in Te Whatu Ora, the New Zealand public healthcare system.

Confidentiality Agreement

The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professional behaviour, including in relation to its admissions procedures.

By accepting the invitation and attending the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) you agree to keep confidential and not to disclose to any person any information relating to:

  1. Any interviewer or other participant in the MMI
  2. The format of the MMI and any scenarios presented or questions asked in the MMI, and you agree not to make any copy or recording (electronic or otherwise) of such information or the MMI, or to use such information in any way which is detrimental to the interests of the University or the Faculty.

During your MMI interview

How MMI interviews are conducted

Shortlisted candidates who apply to more than one of the clinical programmes for 2025 entry will only be offered one MMI interview. Your MMI score will be used when final rankings are made for all programmes you have been invited to interview for.

MMI interviews are conducted online on a platform called Kira Talent. You will interact with your interviewers in real time, from a quiet location of your choosing.

For the online interview, you will need a desktop or laptop computer with a functioning webcam and microphone/speakers (or wired headphones). You cannot use a tablet or mobile phone.

Please ensure that your internet connection is strong enough to hold a video call with both your microphone and camera turned on. Your microphone and camera will need to remain on for the duration of the interview.

What you need for your MMI interview

  • Primary ID and Secondary ID (at least one must be photographic).
  • A computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone.
  • Stable internet for the duration of the interview.
  • A quiet, comfortable space to complete the interview.
  • You must be alone in the room and be able to close the door.
  • You are permitted to have a clear drink bottle.

Things that are not permitted for your MMI interview

Please note that this is a closed interview and it will not be recorded. As such

  • You cannot have or use any recording devices.
  • Note-taking during your MMI interview is not permitted.
  • You may not have any books, written notes, cell phones, smartwatches or additional technology with you in the room.

MAPAS applicants

MAPAS applicants who are shortlisted for an interview will receive two links for two different interviews. Applicants must attend both interviews.

  • One from Kira Talent with the Faculty’s MMI link
  • One link directly from MAPAS for the MAPAS Specialty interviews.

Both these interviews will likely be scheduled for the same day.

Kira Talent MMI Link

You will receive an individual MMI link from Kira Talent once the interview schedule is finalised.

We anticipate that your Kira Talent link will be sent the week before MMI commences. Once you receive this link, you will need to create your Kira Talent account. We strongly suggest you do this before the day of your interview.

Registering an account involves

  • Uploading of a photograph of yourself.
  • Testing of your equipment.
  • Running a practice session so you become familiar with how the process will work.

We recommend you use the computer/laptop and equipment you intend to use on the day.

Failure to complete this registration process will mean you cannot undertake your MMI.

If you have any questions, please visit the Kira Talent applicant help centre in the first instance.

Interview structure

Your interview will be conducted in real time and online via the Kira Talent platform.

The interview is made up of 8 Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) stations.

Each station has one interviewer and takes 8 minutes to complete. The total time to complete the MMI, including admin/rest station, is just over an hour (approximately 65 minutes).

Note that your admin/rest station is part of the interview cycle and could fall anywhere from station 1 to 8. A reminder that you must have your primary and second IDs with you during your MMI.

More information is available on our website, including a short video and examples of the types of scenarios that may be in your MMI.

After your MMI interview

Post-interview support

Following your interview (and during all regular business hours), we will have Student Support Advisers from the Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences and MAPAS available if you need to talk to someone or debrief.

Please note that these staff are not part of the clinical admissions process, and cannot provide any advice on anything around the likelihood of getting an offer, what your academic options might be etc.

These advisers are an independent service with whom you can debrief if you need to. You can also do this with friends, whānau or colleagues. The interview process can be stressful, so we do encourage you to seek support, if you need it. To contact our Support Advisers, please email fmhssupport@auckland.ac.nz

MMI interview outcomes

Once all MMI interviews are complete, the scores are collated and combined with the other elements for programme admission selection, including final GPA and UCAT (if applicable). All applicants will be ranked in their respective application categories.

It is anticipated you will be advised of the outcome of your application(s) during the week of Monday 16 December 2024. You will be notified through Student Services Online and by email.
