Ruochen Li
The desire to study abroad and be exposed to different cultures empowered Master of Community Dance student Ruochen Li to pursue her international education experience at the University of Auckland.
"I'm an international dance student from China and came to New Zealand through a dual degree programme for the Master of Community Dance and Master of Dance Education between the University of Auckland and the Beijing Dance Academy where I initially studied.
"When I first contacted my academic supervisors at Dance Studies University of Auckland, I was in China at the Beijing Dance Academy and felt surprised and touched by their kindness as I had some problems with my scholarship application, which were then resolved with their help. The supervisors also gave me great advice on my studies due to the different ways in which research progresses in the two countries, a process that I felt was warm, genuine, and welcoming.
My favourite part about being at Dance Studies is the multicultural, friendly, harmonious atmosphere and relationships.
"I go to campus nearly every day as we are offered a great learning space, vibe, and resources. I also joined the International Mentor Programme which often provides us with opportunities to participate in various art events, and workshops, as well as ongoing support. This great team enriches my studies and life a lot here.
"Compared to the cities I have lived in before; I love the natural environment in Auckland. I can go hiking or have a walk along a beach, which is very helpful for me to maintain a healthy study-life balance.
"My advice to other international students is to try a variety of activities and communicate with different people. Share your own stories and research as we can get unexpected gains in the process of interacting with people, especially given the flexible and open research environment here which offers opportunities for broad exploration. For me, I couldn't have imagined that I would change so much before coming to study here, and I'm sure it will be an unforgettable journey for other international students too."
