“Studying mathematical modelling was somewhat of an accident. I applied for several other programmes, including a PhD in earthquake engineering. When wavering between offers, I was approached by Hinke Osinga, the programme director of the (MMathModel), about potential research projects. Of the 23 listed, Hinke’s project attracted me immediately because it was the only one about earthquake engineering!

“We had an in-person meeting, and at that time, we could not understand much of what each other was talking about. I was very focused on real structures and experiments, and Hinke was much more mathematical. But I accepted the offer the next day, and I think she was a bit surprised.

“One year later, the programme was a wonderful experience that paved the way for a more well-rounded future.

“I like how the programme bridges between different specialisations and areas of expertise. I always like to approach one problem from various perspectives. As an engineering student, I love arts and poetry. As a design engineer, I love coding and maths. As a Chinese student, I spent eight years studying abroad. My experience taught me that the more views you consider, the closer you get to the truth. It is like the story of “The blind men and the elephant”. In many cases, we are the blind men - the combined view from different fields is the tool for us to see the “true elephant”.

“My advice to anyone considering this programme is to be brave and curious. Take opportunities when presented to you, often landing you in a very interesting place. Don’t be disappointed if you find something particularly challenging. I sometimes became frustrated and depressed, but there were so many friendly and helpful people. Reach out to the lecturers, classmates, and research colleagues. Explain what you’re finding difficult, and they will be more than happy to help.

“I received a lot of support from my supervisor, Hinke. She is always friendly, well-organised, and helpful. She helped me plan my courses, recommended relevant textbooks, and guided my research project.

“I was also delighted to meet my classmates. Many of them are students from the undergrad maths stream. They had unique ways of thinking and taught me a lot.

“During my studies, I did not find myself in need of any specific support group. But I was aware that help was available should I need it. And students should make use of the support services that are there to help.”

“Overall, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone I met in 2022. They all contribute to a colourful memory of a significant period in my life."
