Meegan grew up in Whangārei, where she developed a passion for the Earth from a young age. High-school Geography further sparked her curiosity and fascination, leading her to an Earth Science and Geophysics degree.

"A few factors led to my decision to study at The University of Auckland, primarily proximity to home, scholarship opportunities, and being one of the only universities in New Zealand to offer Geophysics, now Environmental Physics.

"I chose to take on two majors because my interests were so vast I didn't know what to pick! I am pleased I did. The two majors are so intertwined - analysing the Earth's subsurface and surface processes using different tools and perspectives.

"I am keeping an open mind about the future; without a rigid plan in place, I hope my passion for what I do will naturally lead me into a career and/or future study programme that is meant to be.

Engaging with such a diverse group of passionate lecturers, tutors, students, and
everyone in between has inspired me to learn and stay curious in different ways
throughout my studies.

"There is still so much unknown about the Earth's processes, and this knowledge gap ignites my curiosity and passion that has motivated me to pursue postgraduate qualifications.

"Some of the most enjoyable experiences during my degree were the projects that integrated practical work (field or lab) and theory. Although, because I started in the year of COVID-19, most of my degree was online, where possible, I still got to do projects and assignments in both Earth Science and Geophysics/Environmental Physics.

"Engaging with such a diverse group of passionate lecturers, tutors, students, and everyone in between has inspired me to learn and stay curious in different ways throughout my studies.

"I was fortunate to be awarded scholarships throughout my undergraduate degree, which were instrumental to my academic success.

  • The University of Auckland Academic Potential Scholarship Recipient 2019
  • The Weston Sister's Scholarship recipient 2019-2023 (from Whangārei Girls High School)
  • Kurt Kreielsheimer Scholarship recipient 2022

"These scholarships significantly impacted my academic journey and even my ability to enrol at university. I am forever grateful for the opportunities they have opened up."
