On Monday 8 March, the Centre for Supply Chain Management invited Vaughan Grant, Chief Operating Officer at T&G fresh to give a talk on designing supply chain networks.

He presented a methodology for designing supply chain networks based on his experience with a variety of companies in Australasia. His approach addresses the needs many organisations have to simultaneously increase availability, decrease working capital, optimise capacity and improve network resilience, supply chain visibility, transparency and traceability.

In his approach to designing supply chain networks, eight high-level factors are taken into account:

  • Customer expectations
  • Channels to market
  • Inventory
  • Network assets
  • Transport
  • Network cost
  • Capabilities
  • Transformation program

Vaughan's methodology for network design consists of five main stages:

  • Situation analysis
  • Network alternatives
  • Network evaluations
  • Change program
  • Strategic alignment
