Programme: Bachelor of Science (Chemistry & Psychology)

“Coming from a background of competitive sports, classical music and a diverse academic history, Chemistry has always been a big interest of mine. From the way our brains operate to the chemistry of our everyday world, the love for problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity came through to me in the form of Chemistry.

“Currently, I am interested in research areas in the interdisciplinary world of neuroscience, as well as synthetic chemistry – breaking down neuroscience into two broad categories of Chemistry and Psychology has been simply the best decision I have made. I get to have the best of both worlds by testing the limits of both fields!

“What I love about studying Chemistry is the strong connection of both the scientific practice, inquiry, and learning, as well as discovering the art of the field both in and out of the theoretical and practical learning environments. As a lover of challenges and puzzles, Chemistry and Psychology enables me to be as creative as possible to formulate ideas in an attainable way guided by awesome academic staff, postgraduate students, and peers. There is always something to keep you on your toes.

“Coming from Christchurch, the University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship for 2019 has enabled me to form important and cherished friendships and memories at the University Halls of Residence.

“Moving cities up to Auckland from Christchurch was a big milestone. To ensure that I am in the best shape possible both physically and mentally, University Health and Counselling (UHCS) ensured that I was well looked after with expert and personable support with my time at the University. Health (mental and physical) is wealth, and I cannot stress that enough!

“The academic staff and postgraduate students are absolutely incredible. Don’t be afraid to chat with them before or after lectures and in labs also! They love to mentor undergraduate students to find joy in their studies as well as opening our eyes to the infinite possibilities in the world of chemistry (amongst other things).

“As the saying goes ‘stop to smell the roses’, the same applies to the study of Chemistry. Always slow down to think ‘why’? Why is this certain laboratory procedure required, why does a certain chemical behave the way it does, and why I should go and talk to the classmate sitting next to you.

“It is all easier said than done, but just be your unique self, as you bring a fresh perspective into understanding our complex chemical world. Dive into the class, lab, and opportunities. From that, you will be able to find your ground and identity as a budding chemist, surrounded by the best people. The hours may seem long and hard, but it is the most rewarding experience you can ever ask for.”
