Introducing Dr Sarah Marshall
I joined the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management at the University of Auckland Business School (UABS) in October 2023. I’m a member of the Centre for Supply Chain Management and the Embedded Healthcare “research beacon”, one of three such interdisciplinary platforms at UABS for research-based engagement with stakeholders.
My work focuses on leveraging operations research to tackle business and industry challenges. I specialise in deterministic and stochastic modelling, simulation, and analytics, applying these techniques across domains such as remanufacturing, healthcare, rainfall modelling, and water resource management. Currently, I am involved in several projects. Two are highlighted below: warranty claims and preventive geriatric healthcare.
A significant portion of my research has been dedicated to reliability and warranty analysis. Warranty claims have substantial implications for manufacturers, affecting both costs and spare parts management. Accurate estimation is therefore crucial. Recent projects have utilised stochastic modelling techniques to model warranty claims, particularly in scenarios involving ageing (e.g., increasing frequency of repairs or increasing repair times). While this work has been primarily motivated by automotive warranties, it is also applicable to other domains.
Additionally, I am engaged in a project focused on preventive healthcare for geriatric patients. This translational research explores the parallels between preventive maintenance for ageing systems in operations management and supply chain contexts, and preventive care for ageing patients.
I am keen to connect with practitioners working in these and related fields.
