Brittany Luhrs landed her dream job thanks to the practical skills, specialist knowledge and valuable opportunities she gained in studying the Master of Business Management (MBM) programme.
Key facts
Programme: Master of Business Management
Subjects: Digital Marketing
Career: Marketing Coordinator at WeAreTENZING
I chose the MBM because it was tailored to people like me, who didn’t have a degree or experience in marketing but had a real passion to learn.
Brittany applied for the MBM immediately after completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland.
“My undergraduate degree was in communications and media. Halfway through, I realised my real love was for marketing, and I wanted to expand my knowledge and learn practical marketing skills.
“I chose the MBM because it was tailored to people like me, who didn’t have a degree or experience in marketing but had a real passion to learn.”
The programme has deepened her marketing knowledge and helped her land her dream role as a marketing coordinator at WeAreTENZING, an influencer management agency. She’s been able to apply many of the concepts she is learning from the MBM to her new job, including a course on digital branding and influencer marketing.
“Influencer marketing is still quite a niche market, and there aren’t many people who have experience in it. Learning from industry professionals and writing assignments about the industry and specific influencers gave me the experience I needed - and now I work with the same influencers I studied!”
As a current MBM student, Brittany is learning from industry professionals and has gained “invaluable” experience consulting for real businesses such as St John New Zealand.
“For me, the most rewarding part has been using real-life industry tools and working with industry professionals to gain knowledge I wouldn’t have gotten in the workplace. The assignments are all practical and allowed me to learn skills I have used in my job.
“Also, being able to work full-time and continue to study means I am constantly bringing new knowledge to my company.”
In addition to her passion for marketing, Brittany’s MBM coursework sparked a newfound enthusiasm for management.
“While I am a marketing specialisation, I also got to take courses from across the business management side of things and gained a real interest in management which I didn’t have before.
“I found that taking Managing People and Organisations inspired an interest in management and HR that I hadn't considered.”
Aside from the educational rewards, connecting with her fellow students has also been a highlight of Brittany’s MBM experience.
“I have made so many friends. The programme is so varied in age and demographics, but we’re all linked by our passion for marketing.”
Her advice for anyone considering the programme is simple: go for it.
“I’ve loved my MBM experience and have learned so many real-world skills. You have to be self-motivated, have the drive to succeed and the organisational skills to back it all up. It is a lot of work, but it’s worth it for the knowledge, experience, and networks you make along the way.”
