Career: Workplace Experience Specialist at Employsure
I see the MBM programme as a tool that is able to provide me knowledge on all aspects of a business on a functional level, to ensure I have transferable skills in any environment I find myself in.
For Michaella, the programme's impact extends far beyond the classroom. Her specialisation in strategic management has helped her both in a business sense and in her day-to-day life.
"On a business level, I am gaining tools that assist me in analysing businesses. I can explore the various factors that have led to certain decisions and how they can be aligned or misaligned with their organisational purpose or strategic focus.
"On a personal level, I have broadened my thinking to be more long-term focused instead of short-term orientated. Thus I now focus on how my habits can facilitate my goals and ambitions."
As an undergraduate student, Michaella completed her Bachelor of Commerce degree in International Business and Economics. She decided to pursue the MBM out of a desire to learn more about business and establish her career.
"I wasn't really sure how to start my career, but I always had goals of where my career would take me. I'm interested to know the behind-the-scenes functions of businesses, what makes successful ones successful, or how successful companies fail.
"The more I explored the MBM, the more I decided it was for me because I figured it would give me a holistic overview of a business. Now that I'm halfway through, this is definitely the case," she says.
"The MBM has actually helped me understand which sector I want my career to be in and the challenges my chosen sector is undergoing. Thus, I have a better understanding of the industry I am going into, and I can challenge myself to create solutions to address the issues in that sector."
The programme also offered Michaella a real chance to grow personally and professionally.
"If you fully immerse yourself in the experience and try and apply what you're being taught, it definitely has tangible results. I can attest to that, as the MBM has provided greater clarity about the type of career that I want and the way for me to go about achieving it.
"It's an unexpected journey, and there is so much to learn and laughs to be had. But the students in the cohort are undoubtedly the best part. You get to connect with a diverse range of people from diverse backgrounds, various age groups and professions, and so many interesting discussions can be had. So regardless of your experience, do your best to get actively involved, and you'll be surprised how much you grow and learn about yourself and business in a ten-week capacity."
