Key facts

  • Career: Property Consultant, Align
  • Programme: Bachelor of Property

What did you expect to learn, and what surprised you?

"I expected to learn the fundamentals of property and the key drivers of the industry. However, I was surprised to learn how innovative the property industry is and how it is continuously evolving to adapt to emerging market trends. Additionally, I quickly discovered how integral property is to every sector, whether it be in the form of infrastructure, investments, accommodation, developments, mortgages and more. The assignments across the courses made it seamless when applying the theory to real-world issues and situations. This provided insights into not only possible career options but also personal growth."

Business School Tuākana Programme experience

"I came into the [Tuākana] Programme in my first year as a student, attending workshops and exam preparation sessions. In my second year, I became a teaching assistant, hosting these workshops and sessions. I then continued this in my last year. The Tuākana Programme was the key highlight of my time at university. I was able to build my network, provide support to younger students and further my education through teaching."

Extracurriculars and networking at university

"I joined the Property Institute of New Zealand (PINZ) as a student member, which is free. Since joining PINZ I have been involved in the Future Leaders Programme, which has a focus on providing members with credible transferable experience at the leadership and governance level. Through this programme I have now become a member of the IPAC (Institute of Property Advisors and Consultants) and COMPRO (The Commercial Property Managers Institute) Council. I was also named a finalist for the PINZ Future Leader Award for 2023.

"Some of my most memorable experiences were attending the networking and industry events held. These opportunities have shaped my personal and professional growth, as building your network in the property industry is essential for a career in property."

What does your workday look like?

"Property consultancy is significant as you are working with communities from all over New Zealand, whether it be your neighbour, friend, or family. The variety of work and projects is endless – and rewarding, as you are helping New Zealanders. Every day is different for a Property Consultant. My projects mainly include the acquisition of land for council and government agencies, whether it be for roading projects, storm recovery, or public transport. My role differs depending on the stage of the project, but I have been involved in optioneering, community consultation, landowner engagement and acquiring land."

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?

"The most rewarding part of my role is being involved in projects that are going to benefit New Zealanders for a lifetime, such as acquiring land for new roading networks and infrastructure. Whakawhanaungatanga is important to me – it is all about creating strong relationships and working together as one team. I integrate this into my workplace and services when working with stakeholders and clients."

Celeste's advice for students contemplating a Bachelor of Property

"Just do it! Property will be a part of everyone’s life in one way or another, and the knowledge you gain from studying property is invaluable, for example, when applying for a rental property, buying your first home, leasing a space for your business, and investing. Unlike some industries that are being displaced by technological advancements, the property industry is evolving in tandem with innovation."
