Caitlin Killick
Master of Urban Planning student Caitlin is passionate about walkable and cyclable cities and creating positive change.
Why Urban Planning?
“I think what motivated me to study urban planning was how multidisciplinary and versatile the field is. In high school, I was mostly interested in art, design and history. However, I knew I didn’t want to pursue these interests in future studies or as a career.
For me, urban planning took my interests in art, design and history, and made them relevant to the future of our towns and cities. As Urban Planners, we must understand the history of cities and the planning choices made in the past to create positive change.
What area of Urban Planning interests you?
“I am most passionate about the transportation side of urban planning – walking and cycling specifically. I find this area fascinating because of how our urban planning and design choices have impacted how we are able – or not able – to walk and cycle around our cities.”
The Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours)
"I enjoyed how diverse the courses were. We learnt about how urban planning impacts economics, law, environmental issues, history, design and vice versa. I have honestly enjoyed every urban planning course I have studied!"
Why Waipapa Taumata Rau?
“I chose the University of Auckland because it is the best tertiary educator in New Zealand for urban planning. I was excited that the University offered small class sizes and private studio spaces for urban planning students. Smaller classes are great because you have the benefit of working closely with your peers and lecturers over the years.”
Where to next?
"I am currently completing my Master of Urban Planning. In the future, I want to work in the transportation field and contribute to research.”
Caitlin grew up in Christchurch, but moved to Auckland after her family home was damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes. A green-thumb, Caitlin loves to grow her own fruit, vegetables and flowers.
