Tuākana Programme
The Tuākana Programme is an academic and mentoring support programme for Māori and Pacific students in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
Tuākana Mentoring Programme
This is an initiative designed to support new Māori and Pacific students in the Faculty of Engineering and Design during their first year of study. Support is provided through tuākana mentors – senior Māori and Pacific students who have been trained in mentoring.
Mentors meet with their teina regularly to discuss any problems or issues the new student may have. Tuākana will help their teina find solutions, referring them to the correct avenue of support when appropriate.
Students enrolled under MAPTES are automatically signed up. Teina will meet their tuākana at Orientation.
Tuākana Tutorial Programme
The faculty employs high-achieving Part II and Part III Engineering students to provide targeted tutorials and academic support programmes for Māori and Pacific Engineering students. The programme offers an opportunity to work through your course content in more depth and in smaller groups. The tutorials generally start in the second week of the semester.
All core Part I Engineering courses will have tuākana tutorials: Mathematical Modelling, Mechanics, Design, Biology and Chemistry, Materials Science, Computation and Software, and Electrical.
Tuākana tutorials are available for all core Part I courses.
